Tonight, Iran and Egypt play in the Pride Match.
I can’t see a rainbow without thinking of Kian Pirfalak.
He was just nine years old.
A little boy who loved building things, who dreamed, who smiled, and who began his videos with the words, “In the name of the God of Rainbows.”
Days later, he was shot and killed when security forces opened fire on his family’s car. His father was critically wounded beside him.
His mother stood at his funeral and pleaded with the world not to believe the lies that terrorists were responsible. She said it was the security forces who fired the bullets.
She has also spoken of having to keep Kian’s lifeless body at home, surrounded by ice, while she waited to bury her little boy.
No mother should ever have to endure that.
Kian never knew that a rainbow would become his legacy.
For Iranians, it became a symbol of innocence, of hope, and of a childhood stolen by the Islamic Republic.
So tonight, as rainbows are celebrated around the world, I am thinking of the little boy who gave them a different meaning for so many of us.
Kian should have grown up.
He deserved a lifetime, not a memory.
