The top leadership of Gera district in Jimma zone, Oromia region has officially apologized to the local people over the widely condemned verbal and physical abuse perpetrated by local officials against four peasants.

A disturbing footage showing the peasants being abused including being ordered to undress, kneel and beaten in front of a crowd by the district’s chief of security and head of the ruling Prosperity Party has caused distress and uproar on social media.

On Friday, administrator of the Gera district, Hawi Seid, led the district’s top leadership to Borcho Deka, a village where the incident took place and sought apology from local people while condemning the act and reiterating that the perpetrators will face legal consequences.
