Terrorist. Insurgent. Extremist. Militant. Radical. Rogue state. Axis of evil.

They do not have a word, not one that sticks, not one that lands in the history books with the same weight, for what they do.

"Collateral damage" is not a word. It is an erasure dressed as terminology.

"Enhanced interrogation" is not a description. It is torture with a law firm's help.

"Regime change" is not a policy. It is the overthrow of governments that their own populations chose, performed by a country that lectures the world about democracy.

"Pacification", this was the actual military term used in Vietnam, is not a strategy. It is the burning of villages and the killing of civilians described in the language of calming a child.

The naming is the mechanism.

Control the word and you control the moral reality.

Call your violence "operations" and their resistance "terrorism" and you have written the history before the bodies are cold.

This is not propaganda in the crude sense.

It is something more sophisticated: the architecture of legitimate reality.

They built it over centuries.

It is the most load-bearing structure in Western power.

And the first act of resistance is refusing to live inside their language.

Every country that has developed nuclear weapons has given the same reason:

Security. Deterrence. The guarantee that a larger power cannot simply destroy you at will.

The United States developed nuclear weapons because it feared Nazi Germany might develop them first.

The Soviet Union developed nuclear weapons because the United States had them.

Britain developed nuclear weapons because it wanted to maintain great power status independent of American decision-making.

France developed nuclear weapons for the same reason.

China developed nuclear weapons because it faced nuclear threats from the United States during the Korean War, threats that American officials made publicly.

India developed nuclear weapons because China had them.

Pakistan developed nuclear weapons because India had them.

North Korea developed nuclear weapons because it faced decades of American military pressure, nuclear threats, and regime-change hostility, and wanted a guarantee that it could not simply be destroyed at will

Israel developed nuclear weapons because it perceived itself as surrounded by hostile states and wanted a guarantee of last-resort survival.

Now.

Given this consistent, ideologically diverse history of nuclear states invoking security, deterrence, survival, and strategic independence as their rationale:

What exactly is the argument for why Iran, which was invaded by Iraq with Western support in 1980, which has watched the United States overthrow governments in neighboring countries, which has watched what happened to Libya and Iraq after they gave up their weapons programs, which was repeatedly threatened with military attack by both the United States and Israel, and has now been directly attacked by both of them:

What is the argument for why Iran's security rationale is uniquely illegitimate?

Not morally complex. Not worth negotiating around. Uniquely illegitimate.

The argument does not exist.

What exists is a power arrangement dressed as a legal principle.

And the arrangement says: these countries may have nuclear weapons, and these countries may not, and the difference between the two lists is not behavior or treaty compliance or inspection access.

The difference is which side of the arrangement you were born on.

What Syria needed to be removed from the list of "state sponsors of terrorism" was to have a "former" Al Qaeda commander and ISIS associate put in charge.

The word "terrorism," and the legal weapons justified in its name, are totally meaningless and thus malleable.

They don't ask for context when Americans die.

On September 11, 2001, nobody on American television said:

"Before we process this, can we discuss U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East since 1953? Can we talk about the support for the Mujahideen? Can we contextualize the sanctions on Iraq that killed 500,000 children in the 1990s? Can we ask whether American actions created the conditions?"

Nobody said that.

It would have been considered monstrous to say that.

The dead deserved mourning, immediate and unconditional.

But when you show them the dead on the other side, suddenly context is everything.

Suddenly you need to condemn the right people first.

Suddenly grief requires paperwork.

The rule is not "context matters."

The rule is "context matters for their dead."

Yours just need to have filled out the form correctly before they were allowed to bleed.

Every generation of Palestinians has been offered the same choice presented as a new "peace process."

Accept less than the last offer.

Sign a document legitimizing what was taken.

Call it a "state" when it has no army, no contiguous territory, no control of its borders, no sovereignty over its airspace, no capital in the city that was promised.

Call it "peace" when the settlements continue to expand during the negotiation.

Call it a "partner" when that partner is chosen by the occupying power based on their willingness to police their own people on the occupier's behalf.

And when the answer is no, when the people being asked to sign away the remainder of what was taken from them say no, the world nods gravely and says:

They are "not ready for peace."

They have never been offered peace.

They have been offered the administrative language of peace wrapped around the continuing material reality of dispossession.

The difference between those two things is not subtle.

It is the difference between a door and a painting of a door.

You can talk about a painting of a door for decades.

You cannot walk through it.

Here's a thought experiment they don't teach in American schools.

Imagine a foreign power, significantly stronger than the United States, decided after a disputed intelligence assessment that the American government posed a threat.

It assembled a coalition, invaded, removed the government, disbanded the military, releasing hundreds of thousands of armed men into unemployment, and installed a transitional authority composed largely of exiles who had been living in the foreign power’s country for twenty years.

It then spent the next decade conducting night raids on American homes.

It ran detention facilities where Americans were held without charge and in some cases tortured.

It operated checkpoints in American cities where American citizens were stopped, searched, and sometimes killed by foreign soldiers who did not speak English and could not distinguish a civilian from a combatant and in many cases did not particularly try.

A generation of American children grew up in this environment.

Would you describe those children's resulting hostility to the foreign power as:

(A) A rational response to their lived experience

or

(B) Evidence of a cultural pathology that requires theological and anthropological analysis?

You already know the answer.

You knew it before I finished the sentence.

The exercise is only necessary because the question is never asked the right way around.
