In traditional Kalenjin culture, suicide was seen as a severe curse. To quickly rid the home of bad omens, the body was buried hastily, without the usual daytime ceremonies, public mourning, or traditional vigils. Elders also performed strict cleansing rituals. The body arrived at her parents’ home at exactly 7.15 p.m where elders performed the cleansing ritual before she was buried a few minutes past midnight. However, she was buried on her own land, not at her parents’ home.

The husband’s family was informed about the cleansing ritual and invited to participate, but the husband refused, insisting that he should be given the body so that he could bury her. The ceremony was conducted under tight security provided by the government.
