Kenya’s sports, as an element, stand as a key pillar for national development, contributing an estimated 4–5% to economic growth under the Bottom‑Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
This vibrant sector spans football, athletics, rugby, basketball and other competitive disciplines, driving participation and investment.
Athletics dominates globally, earning over 10 world championship medals per season and millions in prize money, while football engages 40–45% of organized sports activity nationwide.
However, during hosting CHAN 2024/2025, Kenya’s tourism sector saw a 9.9% rise in passenger arrivals in the third quarter of 2025 (Q3 2025), injecting billions of shillings into hospitality, transport and services.
On the other hand, rallying events like the World Safari Rally attracted about 400,000 spectators and added roughly Sh4 billion to the economy, illustrating sports tourism’s multiplier effects.
Stadium capacity has expanded beyond traditional 20,000–30,000 seats to flagship projects such as Talanta Sports City, targeting 60,000 seats, while corporate sponsorships and talent development continue to deepen the sports’ economic footprint in Kenya.
