unlike traditional systems that track file changes, git creates snapshots of your entire project state

this is achieved through a key-value database (stored in .git/objects) with 4 primitive data types:

- blob - the contents of a specific version of a file

- tree - a content directory. achieved by storing elements which can be a reference to either another tree or a blob

- commit - a snapshot of a particular state of the project. achieved by storing a reference to a tree object, along with metadata like timestamp and log message

- tag - a reference to another object with additional metadata

each object is identified by a sha-1 hash, creating an immutable chain where any corruption is immediately detectable

this distributed model means every developer has a complete repository copy - no single point of failure and no network dependency for most operations
