🦔Hackers stole the DNA data of 7 million 23andMe customers in a 2023 breach. The settlement pays them an average of $6.60 each. The claims administrator Kroll received $20.3 million for its work. The co-founder then bought the bankrupt company through a nonprofit, and the DNA data transferred with the sale.

My Take
$6.60 for your DNA. Kroll told each person they could receive up to $10,000 from a $48 billion claim, but the court called $6.60 reasonable because the company was broke. Kroll collected $20 million to process the claims while the 7 million people who lost their genetic data split $46 million. The system worked for everyone in this case except the people whose DNA was stolen.

And the DNA didn't disappear when the company went bankrupt. The co-founder bought it through a nonprofit and the genetic data transferred as an asset. You can change a password or cancel a credit card. You can't change your DNA, and it now belongs to an entity that none of the 7 million people ever agreed to share it with. The legal system put a price on the most personal data that exists and the price was a cup of coffee.
