‘Go beyond holiday declarations’: Kabataan challenges schools to open campuses for alternative historical discussions for EDSA commemoration
Kabataan Partylist commends all schools that announced the suspension of work and classes this February 25 to commemorate EDSA People Power. We are one in our collective struggle for freedom, justice, and democracy.
However, to truly counter historical distortion and to honor the sacrifices of thousands of young Filipino martyrs who fought against the Marcos dictatorship, we must go further. We should go beyond bringing back the holiday.
While pausing the normal school day routine in defiance of the Malacanang’s imposed ignorance allows for a day of reflection, it can also be a day of distractions and errands. We must acknowledge that for the new generation today, the EDSA uprising’s anniversary may be too distant a time to trigger reflection or even curiosity. We were not there—the experiences to reflect upon are not our own.
The decades spent instating February 25 as a holiday cannot alone combat the organized disinformation campaign to rehabilitate the Marcos dictatorship and in turn enable new iterations of tyranny under Duterte up to the present Marcos Jr. administrations. The youth of today must draw indignation and action from their own deep pool of experiences of repression. We are no strangers to the consequences of the unfettered abuse of absolute power: from direct state-sponsored repression to draconian school handbook policies. It is therefore more important to learn from the rich history of struggle by generations past to inspire a larger movement for a society that goes beyond the vision of EDSA I that addresses the roots of systemic poverty, corruption and foreign subservience hostaging the future of the youth.
We appeal to educators and to concerned students to be as organized and deliberate as the Marcos propaganda machine, if note more, in our efforts to impress the significance of People Power to this day. Let’s go beyond holidays. We urge educators and their schools to allow students to exercise academic freedom and use their campuses and academic spaces for alternative learning activities on EDSA. Let us allow students to freely converse about pressing issues today that trail back to problems of justice and impunity, from the abuse of public funds to questions of impeachment.
In the long run, it is in the interest of the nation to empower the youth’s right to express, organize and assemble to ensure our democratic rights—and this should start in school.
We need a generation of Filipinos who critically understand the impact, limitations and shortcomings of EDSA People Power. We are not here to glorify blindly, but to acknowledge the continuing need for collective action to achieve genuine social change. Especially as we approach the 2025 elections, we challenge fellow youth and students to not only recall history, but to be actively involved in making it, starting with collective discussions on social realities we face day to day, holiday or otherwise.
