I’m a Canadian, and one who may never return except for funerals. My schools as a kid were pretty good about trying to form a Canadian identity, albeit one rooted in British roots. My classmates were all but one European descendants, and perhaps had the trend continued long enough it would have come to something.

Every effort of that time has been obliterated by endless waves of never-to-assimilate nons. Every level of society serves to facilitate the portfolio growth of the Laurentians at any and preferably all costs. The nation building of Confederation chucked in the bin in favour of real estate prices and the Century Initiative, because 90 million bomalians is exactly the same thing as Germans and English, or even Portuguese and Polish.

Last time I lived there you could conflate finding a product made in Canada with winning the lottery, or at least the fruits of a luxury lifestyle. Why exactly does one need 100m people when one makes nothing? Raw unfettered consumption does not form a healthy nation. At best it gets you an economic zone, and prerhaps in this regard Canada is a success.

My country has already died. The body is being scavenged for GDP. I still don’t know what to tell my son when he asks what nationality he is.
