Myths like “babies are not brown in the womb” are exactly why we need more anatomical imagery showing Black and Brown birthing people and fetuses. Medicine is limited by this constant depiction of whiteness as the norm and standard.
[1] And after birth, all babies go through the transition from receiving oxygen through their umbilical cord to receiving it through breathing through their lungs — and this comes with a color shift in their skin often from a “bluer” or “purpler” shade to a “redder” one — but
At certain stages of development yes — the fetal skin is so thin it’s translucent, giving it a reddish appearance from the outside — all babies go through this stage — but not all babies are born pink!!!
At birth a baby’s skin is likely to be a bit lighter than it will ultimately be — but again babies are born with different skin colors!!! Illustrating them in womb as different shades is not illogical!
Interesting myth coming up with the latest beautiful illustration of a black fetus in the womb — that babies don’t have skin color until after birth. Skin color does shift after birth but all babies are not born pink!!!
@ravenscimaven This is why I started making @TheEducatedBirth illustrations in 2016 and honestly it’s been hard as hell and I need support to keep going — hundreds of illustrations to date ❤️
