Belgium arrived in Rwanda in 1916 and invented a racial hierarchy where none had existed. They issued identity cards — Tutsi. Hutu.
Gave Tutsis preferential treatment. Told Hutus they were inferior. Built a country on a lie.
Then in 1962 they left.

They left the lie behind.

Thirty years of tension. Massacres. Hundreds of thousands of refugees. Civil war. Ceasefire in 1993. Hutu extremists had already decided peace was not the plan.

For months before April 1994 — hundreds of thousands of machetes stockpiled from China. Lists compiled of every Tutsi and moderate Hutu. And Radio Mille Collines — broadcasting into every home. Calling Tutsis cockroaches. Directing Hutus to do their work. Which roadblocks. Which houses.

April 6 1994 — the President's plane was shot down over Kigali. Within hours the killing had started.

House to house with the lists. Roadblocks across every road. Identity cards checked. Tutsi on the card. Dead. Churches filled with people seeking sanctuary. The killers followed them inside.

One hundred days. Between 800,000 and one million people murdered.

The world watched and did nothing. The UN commander begged for permission to act. Permission denied. The US refused to use the word genocide. France maintained relations with the genocidal government.

The Rwandan Patriotic Front ended it when they fought into Kigali in July 1994.

Rwanda has rebuilt. But the graves are still there. And the countries that built the lie were never held to account.
