Only 11 African countries have included mental health in their disaster plans, leaving millions without support during emergencies.
@WHOAFRO is urging urgent action to close this gap and ensure mental wellbeing is protected before, during, and after crises.
#MentalHealthMatters
Mental health care is not a luxury, it’s a lifeline.
In times of crisis, disaster or emergency, mental health and psychosocial support must be at the centre of every response plan.
Let’s champion safe, healthy spaces which promote and protect good mental health.

Happening Now: The sub-regional workshop to accelerate IGAP implementation strengthening diagnosis, treatment & care for epilepsy & neurological disorders. Over 4 million people in the African Region live with active epilepsy, many without access to needed treatment.
Despite the availability of effective diagnosis and treatment, three out of four people in low-income countries living with Epilepsy do not get the care they need.
The @WHO Intersectoral Global Action Plan, (IGAP) endorsed by the World Health Assembly in 2021, provides us with a clear roadmap.
It calls on us to ;
✅ Raise policy prioritisation
✅ Ensure timely diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and other neurological conditions.
✅ Invest in prevention and brain health promotion.
✅ Strengthen data and research
✅ Approach epilepsy and other neurological disorders through a public health lens.
In short, the IGAP is our collective opportunity to turn commitments into action ‼️
Starting today, we kick off the Intercountry Learning Workshop on Epilepsy & Neurological Disorders in Southern Africa.
Together with partners, we’re accelerating the implementation of IGAP to make epilepsy & other neurological disorders a public health priority.
