The Sebei and Pokot of Uganda are easily being registered as voters in readiness to vote for Ruto.

The Bukusu and Abagisu of Uganda have been issued with Kenyan IDs but the officials are hesitant to give them voters cards because they may prefer Sifuna.

Ruto has spent four years reminding everyone that “nilimshinda Uhuru na project yake.”
Now that Uhuru has responded and reminded Kenyans of what happened four years ago, Ruto is complaining that Uhuru is reviving memories of 2022.
You can’t spend four years reopening an old political scorecard, then complain when the other side turns the page back to the same chapter.

The more I watch this opposition drama, the more I think the old KANU instinct is still alive, because people like Uhuru and Kalonzo are far more comfortable with political arrangements they can understand, influence and keep within familiar circles than with something completely new that they cannot control.

My reading of Uhuru is that he does not simply want Ruto gone, he wants to retain enough influence over the opposition to help decide where it goes, who becomes acceptable, who gets blocked and what kind of government eventually comes after Ruto.

That is why I keep saying the people who may fear a completely new political order more than another Ruto term are some of these old KANU boys themselves, because Ruto is somebody they know, somebody they have governed with, fought with, negotiated with and learned how to deal with over many years.

A new political force led by people who owe them nothing is a different animal entirely, and that is where you start wondering whether some of these people really want regime change or simply want enough control over the next arrangement to remain comfortable whichever way things go.

Rigathi Gachagua looks different to me, because his biggest interest may actually be building DCP into a serious parliamentary and county machine, winning as many MPs, senators, governors and MCAs as possible, then becoming impossible for whoever wins the presidency to ignore.

That kind of politician can work with almost anyone after the election if his party has numbers, and the real prize becomes bargaining power, political relevance and control of a large political network rather than necessarily dying on the hill of one presidential candidate.

So the opposition problem may be much deeper than who becomes the flagbearer, because different people inside that camp may actually want very different things from 2027, and once those interests collide, the so called unity can become much more fragile than it currently looks.
