📜 The first right in the government's Victims' Code is "to be able to understand and to be understood."
This doesn't chime with the experience of @HarrowLawCentre and its community, which has seen an increase in local hate crime. (1/6) 🧵
🎓 MINDSET MATTERS. This isn't a nuanced debate that requires equal airing of all sides. These mobs are attacking our version of democracy and society. These aren't protesters pushing for a change in government policy. They are attacking marginalised parts of your community.
.@BBC insisting on reporting racist rioters as 'protestors' and 'demonstrators' is a gross misrepresentation of the violence impacting communities of colour across the UK. Language matters.
The media and political class is complicit in the far right, racist and Islamophobic violence we’re seeing across our country.
This morning, I experienced the visceral denial of this reality.
As Baroness Chakrabarti put it so well:
“When most people lack timely access to justice when facing the loss of their liberty, home, child, livelihood or safe environment, the rule of law becomes mere fairy tale.” (5/6)
Here is that disastrous legacy of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act (2012) spelt out:
🚨 The number of legal aid cases to help people get the early advice they need dropped from almost 1 million in 2009–10, to just 130,000 in 2021–2022. (2/6)
🚨 According to @TheLawSociety, by next year, a single person will not be eligible for legal aid unless he or she earns less than £9 a day, or £268 a month. That is 81% below the Minimum Income Standard. (4/6)
"The consequences [of #LegalAid cuts] have been disastrous."
@FightBach is the Chair of @CALSfreeadvice, our new Law Centre in Leicester. Thanks, Lord Bach, and Baroness Chakrabarti, for fighting our corner in yesterday's #KingsSpeech debate on justice. (1/6) 🧵
The need for legal aid has not gone away. What’s changed is government neglect: choosing to give less help with fewer problems to fewer people and at a later point. (5/6)
Legal aid was a pillar of the welfare state that sat alongside our NHS and social security system—and reduced the burden on each by reducing homelessness, improving people’s health and keeping people in work. (4/6)
The shameful #RwandaBill will rip a hole through #HumanRights protections and the right to #asylum in the UK.
We've joined 250+ organisations calling on the Prime Minister to choose compassion, not cruelty.

🚧In the UK today there are barriers preventing people from enjoying rights.
⭐️A human rights-based approach can help change that and you could be a part of that change.

The Cult of Beauty @ExploreWellcome was fascinating & eclectic — standout piece was Robert Taylor and David McAlmont’s film ‘Permissible Beauty’ on Black queer identity, set amidst splendours of @HRP_palaces — gorgeously shot and riveting.
