Yesterday, on the 37th anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre, China Labor Watch's Executive Director and Founder @liqiangnyc published an article on his experiences and perspectives.
He wrote that the protests included many workers and that the crackdown has reinforced a political order that made independent worker organizing nearly impossible.

"Earlier this year, China Labor Watch submitted complaints with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Germany's Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control, also known as BAFA, saying it had uncovered evidence of worker exploitation at a Chinese factory that exclusively manufactures the doll for Pop Mart."

This @washingtonpost investigation is a must-read piece.
It exposes how BYD’s contractors allegedly used #forcedlabor of Chinese workers to build a factory and expand their operations in #Brazil.
Non-stop work without safety equipment, 20-30 people sharing one room, confiscation of passports... These conditions akin to modern day slavery are not only bad for Chinese workers, but forced labor by Chinese companies also harms Brazilian workers, American workers, and gives Chinese companies an unfair advantage against their American rivals.
At @NEDemocracy, we’re proud that one of our long-term partners, @chinalaborwatch has been at the forefront of exposing forced labor practices by Chinese companies around the world.

A new report from the Washington Post finds Chinese workers were recruited to build the BYD Brazil facility and subject to 'slavery-like' conditions. Workers had their passports confiscated, toiled in unsafe working conditions and had their wages withheld. Prosecutors filed a lawsuit against BYD and two contractors. A settlement was reached in December.
CLW's upcoming report on Chinese migrant workers constructing BYD's Hungary factory also points to serious labor risks.

Forced and coerced labor doesn’t only happen in factories. In China’s prison system, “reform through labor” can become a system of coercion—where work is tied to points, punishment, and even early release.
