Elon Musk sent every Tesla employee a memo that took authority away from their managers and handed it to them.

He never asks for more hours. Every rule moves a decision closer to the person doing the work.

Musk: “Excessive meetings are the blight of big companies and almost always get worse over time.”

Companies have a role for everyone who creates process and no role for anyone who removes it. Meetings and approval chains survive because removing them was never anyone’s job.

Musk: “Walk out of a meeting or drop off a call as soon as it is obvious you aren’t adding value.”

Attendance has always been treated as proof of commitment. He made it worthless, and contribution became the only thing that counts in the room.

Musk: “It is not rude to leave, it is rude to make someone stay and waste their time.”

Ordinary manners protect whoever called the meeting. He moved that protection to everyone else sitting quietly with real work waiting on them.

Musk: “Don’t use acronyms or nonsense words for objects, software, or processes at Tesla. Anything that requires an explanation inhibits communication.”

Internal vocabulary converts knowledge into status and charges every newcomer a fee to participate.

A company that speaks plainly can absorb talent at full speed.

Musk: “Communication should travel via the shortest path necessary to get the job done, not through the chain of command.”

Most good ideas die in transit, three levels below anyone with the power to act on them.

Musk: “Any manager who attempts to enforce chain of command communication will soon find themselves working elsewhere.”

The only threat in the entire memo. A manager who insists on being routed through is buying his own relevance with everyone else’s time. Musk put a price on it.

Musk: “Always pick common sense as your guide. If following a company rule is obviously ridiculous in a particular situation, the rule should change.”

Following a bad rule normally shields you. Exercising judgment exposes you.

He flipped which one carries the risk, and every rule now has to earn its place against the person applying it.

Every institution drifts toward protecting its own comfort. The ones that keep building are held together by people who rewrite the rules back down to something a single person can act on.

Nothing on that list requires a budget, a headcount, or a title.

You can run the entire memo from wherever you are sitting right now. Most people never test it and never learn it was permitted the whole time.

I spent 14 days in China, and it was my favorite trip in a while.

It changed so much since I visited 11 years ago that it felt like a new country. Here is what I liked about China, and what I didn’t.

1. EV adoption is huge. 100% of scooters are electric. You can walk on busy streets and it’s surprisingly quiet! It made me enjoy cities again.

2. It’s so convenient. All restaurants let you scan a QR code to order and pay. You can order a taxi and drive 100 km for $30. The malls are so big you can spend an entire day there.

3. Value for money is top notch. Hotels are new, food is delicious, and yet everything is super affordable. Chinese people are really committed to doing their best, and you can feel this everywhere you go. It’s very humbling.

4. Chinese people are super friendly! We made friends everywhere we went: restaurants, hotels, taxis. I memorized Chinese sentences like 是免費的嗎？ (“Is it free?”) and I would repeat them to outdoor vendors for fun. They would laugh and come slap me on the shoulder! I even got a free ice cream doing this ^^

5. Internet is a gamble. The Great Firewall blocks a lot of websites. You need a VPN and eSIM to access Western websites. And it’s not guaranteed to work, so it’s tricky to get deep work done. I used Revolut eSIMs. It’s expensive, but most websites worked.

When I called my parents during the trip, they couldn’t believe how modern China is. For most people in the West, China is still a third-world country.

There are 17 cities with 10M+ inhabitants. Most of them were built in the last 30 years.

When I was in Hangzhou 杭州, I felt like I was in an ant house. Very crowded, yet super modern, quiet, and organized.

My wife and I loved the trip so much. We’ll come back next year and get lost in China because there are so many wonderful places to go.

Satan is not opposed to good morals.

He is opposed to Jesus Christ.

A man can feed the hungry, keep his promises, pay his debts, and remain completely lost. Satan does not need to turn every man into a monster. He only needs to teach a respectable man that he has no need of a Savior.

The deception is that morality and salvation are not the same thing.

The men arguing with Christ in John 8 claimed Abraham as their father. They knew the law and trusted their religious standing. Jesus told them, “Ye are of your father the devil” (John 8:44).

Their problem was not that they lacked religion. Their religion had become a refuge from the Son of God standing in front of them.

Good works cannot do what the blood of Christ does.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9)

You can be kind without Christ. You can be disciplined without the Holy Spirit. You can be respected by your neighbors and still refuse the King who made you.

Satan is perfectly content with morality that keeps a man from repentance.

He wants you trusting your record instead of Christ’s sacrifice, your discipline instead of God’s grace, and your reputation instead of the finished work of Jesus.

A repentant thief beside Christ had no religious résumé left to offer. The woman in Luke 7 was known only as “a sinner,” yet Christ told her, “Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.”

The respectable man who rejects the Son is not safer than either of them.

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (John 3:36)

Your neighbors may call you good. Your church may call you faithful. Your own conscience may point to a clean record.

None of those voices can save you.

Satan does not have to make you wicked in public. He only has to keep you from bowing to Jesus Christ.

Stop trusting your morals to do the work of a Savior. Bring your sin, your goodness, your reputation, and your empty hands to Christ.

Only Jesus saves.
