I laughed. I really laughed hard when I saw it, couldn’t hold myself back.
But deep down, I knew…
It wasn’t laughter. It was anger.. just escaping my chest wearing a smile.

I decided to buy it.
For my mother, to add to our “fake maqluba” — We call it fake because there’s no chicken in it.
And still, even without chicken, it costs around 280 shekels…
That’s nearly 80 dollars!
And even then, it’s missing more than just the chicken.. It’s missing the things we stopped talking about… like the sense of being alive, not just surviving!

I handed the vendor a bill.
He refused—it had a small tear.
I gave him another—he refused again.
This one had a barely visible wrinkle.

I asked him, “Why? There’s nothing wrong with it!”
He said,
“The wholesalers who sell me vegetables don’t accept damaged bills.”
And then he added: “I’m sorry.”

So I smiled, and told him:
“No worries. It’s just an onion, right? I’m sorry too.”

I walked back to the tent, and one thought kept echoing in my head:
