Boman Irani’s story is not overnight success. It is 14 years behind a wafer counter.

He was born in Mumbai on 2 December 1959. His father died six months before he arrived. His mother raised him and three sisters while running a small namkeen and wafer shop on Grant Road, carrying debt she never let her children feel.

As a boy he had dyslexia, a lisp and crushing anxiety. People called him duffer and bechara Boman to his face. He barely spoke.

After a catering course he became a waiter and room-service staff at the Taj Mahal Palace. Two years of trays and tips. When his mother was injured, he left the hotel and stood behind the family shop for the next 14 years selling chips and tea, getting married, raising children, paying bills.

In the little time left he bought a camera with saved tips and photographed school cricket and football matches for ₹20–30 a picture. Later he covered boxing. Theatre found him through Shiamak Davar and Alyque Padamsee.

Bollywood did not arrive until he was 43–44. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) as Dr. Asthana changed everything. Then Virus in 3 Idiots, and a career that made him one of Hindi cinema’s most trusted character actors.

No connections. No early break. Just a mother who kept the shop open, a man who kept showing up, and a late start that still became a legacy.

Respect to Boman Irani. Some journeys take 40 years. They are still worth it.❤️

He smashed the idol of Tulja Bhavani, kuladevi of the Bhonsles. Sri Bhavani was broken into pieces, thrown into a hand-mill and pounded into dust. A cow was slaughtered in front of the temple.

He was dead within weeks at Pratapgad.

The most expensive part of a hospital bill may never touch the hospital at all.

A patient admitted for care has no way of knowing whether the price on a medical consumable reflects its actual cost or a markup fixed long before it ever reached the ward. That gap in information is, at its core, a public health issue.

A survey of hospital consumables in Maharashtra found an IV infusion set with a trade price of ₹11.05 carrying a printed MRP of ₹325 ; a markup of 2,841%. A syringe procured at ₹6.75 carried an MRP of ₹57.20. A catheter procured at ₹29.41 carried an MRP of ₹310.

These are not elective purchases. Patients cannot compare prices, seek alternatives, or question a number printed on a box while receiving care and the MRP itself is often fixed upstream by manufacturers and distributors, disconnected from the trade price by a wide, unexplained margin. The result is a system where the party bearing the cost has the least information to evaluate it.

The regulatory gap is structural: scheduled medicines are capped under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. Most medical devices and consumables are not leaving both the pricing and the information around it almost entirely unmonitored.

A review of these findings and clear guidelines on the permissible gap between trade procurement price and declared MRP have been recommended to the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the NPPA ; a step toward closing not just a pricing gap, but the information gap patients are left to bear alone.
