Alberta NDP Critic for Justice, Irfan Sabir, and Alberta NDP Critic for Advanced Education, Rhiannon Hoyle, issued the following joint-statement in response to the events at demonstration at the University of Calgary:
"We are deeply troubled by reports of what happened at the University of Calgary last night. Students should be able to peacefully protest. Our post-secondary institutions must be places of respectful conversations, enlightened debate and constructive solutions to bring about a more peaceful world.
"At an institution that should champion freedom of speech, the actions of the Calgary Police appeared to be disproportionate to the actions of protestors. They also appear inconsistent to previous reactions by police to protests in other settings. As a result, we believe last night’s incident warrants an independent investigation by ASIRT.
"All students on campus must be free from discrimination. No student should feel unsafe as they attend class and must feel free to be who they are, without fear. All those advocating for a ceasefire and the return of all hostages should be recognized for their message and their right to speak out. We denounce and have zero tolerance for hate in all forms, be it antisemitism, anti-Palestinian racism or any other form of discrimination.""
Awkward question, but I'll ask it.
In what world is a recall campaign for Jyoti Gondek warranted -- but not Sean Chu?

Every year, 4 million people with #tuberculosis are missed by health systems – left undiagnosed & untreated. #TBREACH works to ensure that people with TB can get the care they need. I call on Canada to invest $33 million/3 years to TB REACH to #EndTB@HarjitSajjan#Canada4Results
Thank you 🇨🇦 for stepping up with CAD$1.2 billion for the @GlobalFund! Canada can be proud of its contribution to the #FightForWhatCounts and for @JustinTrudeau’s leadership in the quest to end the epidemics of AIDS, TB and malaria.
This has bothered me for 37 years (and I'm only 50). We were too busy fighting about whether turbaned Sikhs could be police officers to seek justice for nearly 300 Canadians murdered.
Hi. This is the National Day of Remembrance of Victims of Terrorism. I must remember next year to poll on what Canadians think originated this day.
A thread ... I invite you to follow along.

The video of police hugging protestors at the Coutts border in Alberta is infuriating to see.
Here is video of how people protecting homeless encampments were treated by police in Toronto last summer.
See the difference?
This #EducationDay we must prioritize foundational skills such as reading & math to ensure children are receiving the learning they need to thrive in the future. Thank you @IPNEducation for convening parliamentarians from around the globe to take action on the learning crisis!
Africa is now facing the world’s fastest growth rate for new COVID cases. On current trajectory the wave will likely surpass previous peaks.
But only 0.6% of Africa’s adult population is fully vaccinated.
This is a human tragedy and an economic calamity. WE MUST ACT — FAST!
