Moved and grateful for a kindred read on my on-going project on the anti-colonial war in Malaya by Tash Aw in the art issue of @nybooks, focused on my last solo show and the first of four books I'm making from the project. https://t.co/4KaTaeEpI8
It’s getting real: just got the catalogue from @PenguinBooks for the September launch of my book on counter-history in China with a snazzy cover by @aiww
The catalogue cover features the late great Wang Xiaobo, whose essays are finally appearing in English!
Art Talk in Brooklyn Heights: 🎨Tonight I was so happy to be in conversation with artist @chiyin_sim and her powerful meditation on colonial intimacies, family silences, British Malaya, and China. @AsiaArtArchive it was recorded ICYMI.
@sorsoup@AllusionistShow @lottelydia I do not make that link. Overall there has been no accounting for Batang Kali, and other incidents which may have been deemed war crimes in Malaya -- beheadings, trophying of skulls etc.
@sorsoup@AllusionistShow @lottelydia I have seen only one legal attempt to hold the British troops to account -- the Batang Kali case. It was thrown out of court in the UK and then the EU Human Rights court.
A new episode is in your podfeed. The British Empire had a trick of calling some of their wars 'emergencies' instead of wars, really quite the euphemism for eg the Malayan Emergency which was a 12-year conflict. @chiyin_sim and @lottelydia explain why https://t.co/MgHeFMEJLA
Sim Chi Yin (@chiyin_sim) presents the land as an archive for conflict and memory. Surreal, blurred images document isolated sites in Malaysia and Thailand.

China is one of Russia’s closest partners, but supporting the invasion would damage Beijing’s ties with wealthy democracies and alienate many Chinese citizens, writes

Nuclear history comes back to bite us… Russian forces are battling Ukrainians in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, risking damaging the cement-encased reactor. Consequences will be felt from far… These images I made in 2017 are from a U.S. facility built during the Cold War.
Beijing: For many years basements beneath the city have been #home to #lowearners in #Bejing. @chiyin_sim has created portraits of the residents over four years. Find the #photography series as well as an #interview in our new issue! To order: https://t.co/ZyM2iptvwo #housing
Happy new year from Brooklyn! After an intense two years with a dozen exhibitions, a new book, a baby and moving across continents in a pandemic, we’ve relocated here with our toddler and will be based between New York and Berlin over the next two years. Instagram @chiyin_sim
