TODAY: The launch of Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) humanitarian open street mapping project on mapping of dumpsites along the Nairobi-Athi Galana Sabaki catchment took place today at NEMA Headquarters in Nairobi.
NEMA is a beneficiary of the Eastern and Southern Open mapping grant 2024 after successful submission of a proposal titled, “mapping of dumping along the Nairobi-Athi-Galana- Sabaki Catchment.” The grant amounting to $ 7,500 will aid in solid waste mapping. It will also enhance community development and social impact through open mapping.
The launch was spearhead by the NEMA Director General, Mamo B. Mamo, EBS and ESA’s Regional Director, Humanitarian Open Street Map Team (HOT), Monica Nthiga. @openmapping_esa
The World Bank estimates that currently about 56% (4.4 billion inhabitants) of the world's population live in cities and towns- this poses the challenge of solid waste largely due to the increasing urban population.
The project aligns with the objective of Sustainable Cities and Communities which aims at addressing waste management challenges, improving water quality, reducing air pollution and promoting clean environment. The project will enhance human dignity by protecting rivers and promoting better waste infrastructure through mapping for decision support and infrastructure planning. @openmapping_esa

Looking forward to this month Mapathons.
