May 29, 1453: Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, was lost to Christendom after a 53-day siege. Emperor Constantine XI Dragases Palaiologos and 4,773 Greek soldiers, as well as 200 foreigners, fell in battle against the 150K-strong horde of Ottoman barbarians.
