Why do school uniforms matter?
Why does good behaviour in schools matter?
This is the first in a series of videos where I explain what’s wrong with the Schools Bill.
Reducing class sizes is one of the biggest red herrings in education policy. It’s not that smaller class sizes aren’t in general, better. It’s because the effect size of reducing the number in the class is incredibly small unless you reduce it so much that the subsequent increase of staff you’d need would be financially and practically impossible.
My open letter to the Education Secretary @bphillipsonMP
Many teachers and school leaders share my concerns with regard to her decisions but are scared to say.
If you can find it in you, please RT.
My letter is also here: https://t.co/phAiybAov5
Another grim article that seeks to justify violent assault against students and teachers. It’s unbelievable how some people can find out a student attacked others in school, needed to be excluded as a result, and their sympathies are solely reserved for the attacker. https://t.co/Ot01RWyDYm
The more schools I see the more I become convinced that implementing detentions should almost always be a whole school system, rather than something left up to individual classroom teachers to issue, communicate and hold, especially where it comes to follow up for non-attendance.
It just guarantees a huge variation in consistency. Because it relies on the teacher having the confidence, organisation, willpower and workload to implement it, and those are factors that wax and wane depending on the circumstances.
Arguments that this degrades the teacher’s ‘agency’ never seem to describe what, precisely, the benefits of this agency actually are.
Anon post: Attended Ofsted inspection update webinar tonight. Was great to hear about the changes they propose and the focus on wellbeing. I was almost convinced UNTIL the Q&A section where one of the inspectors commented that if schools hadn’t heard by Monday lunchtime they were “safe” for that week. Such a flippant comment to make but also shows that their mindset has not really changed at all! We should all be “safe” at all times, whether in the inspection window or not.
I finally went to see Stanley Road, @primarypercival ‘s school.
Just WOW.
Brave, bold, and utterly inspirational.
People say this can’t stuff be done at primary.
Rebecca and Andrew and their staff prove that wrong in every possible way.
LONG LIVE THE REVOLUTION!! ✊🏾
Wow, end of an era. One of the most effective education ministers ever. The school system is in much better shape because of his efforts. ‘The same small good thing for a long, long time.’

Annie Carter @sparklesannie79 talking about defining and building a powerful school culture; where a focus on Virtue enables children to develop great habits that will build character, self-confidence, conscientiousness, exemplary manners and morals.
Consistency! Too often SLT aren’t consistent. SLT need to be able to credibly model ‘policy’. To teach teachers the attention to detail that creates unambiguous expectations. It’s more than a PowerPoint. It’s every interaction. It’s a deliberate performance.
