11 April 1994, When protection was withdrawn, and lives were left behind.

At the height of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, thousands of Tutsi sought refuge at ETO Kicukiro, trusting the presence of United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda.

But on this day, Belgian UN peacekeepers, under Lt. Luc Lemaire, withdrew, abandoning those they were meant to protect.

Within hours, over 2,000 people were killed.

This was not just a tragic moment—it was a failure of international responsibility.

Peacekeeping is not only about presence. It is about protection, courage, and commitment when it matters most.
When that duty is abandoned, neutrality becomes complicity.

As we remember during #Kwibuka32, we must ask:

👉 What is the value of peacekeepers if they cannot protect the vulnerable?
👉 What lessons has the world truly learned?

#NeverAgain must mean never abandoning those at risk.
