From dirt roads to global glory, the story of American motorsport has been fueled by innovation, grit and longstanding tradition. As the sport grew, so did its identity, bringing massive crowds to racetracks across the United States, with new talent rising and international events expanding to major cities. American drivers and manufactures proved they could dominate on the world stage.
Getty Images brings that story to life through its comprehensive motorsport collection - featuring more than 26 million images, with new content added regularly, and coverage spanning legendary racing moments as far back as 1895 to today’s race-day action across F1, NASCAR, Formula E, MotoGP, Le Mans, and beyond.
Chris Graythen, Getty Images’ Staff Sports Photographer and motorsport specialist, based in New Orleans, has been covering the sport for over 20 years. He shares his insight on the evolution of motorsport:
“To photograph motorsport well, you have to know the sport. The speed, the noise, the smell of gas and tires! It draws you in, and to the untrained eye it looks like pure chaos. Photographing motorsport turns that chaos, the color and the motion into split seconds, showing the moments that matter even as the laps continue on.
A 3.853 mile circuit, 17 turns and only 90 minutes to cover the Formula 1 race in Las Vegas? As a photographer, you have to know every corner, where the light will be, what’s the fastest line through the turn, and where the car will be. Additionally, how the drivers will celebrate, if it will be a tire-shredding burnout, or a backflip off a door, or just a simple hand in the air. All these details matter to capture standout imagery.
Since 2006, more than 175,000 laps have passed in front of my lenses. 314,000+ images later, most centered on cars, drivers, and the passion of the sport, I’ve watched it all evolve. Drivers and rivalries change; cars adjust to new regulations; tracks adjust to fans’ needs. But the fans and their passion for motorsport never changes.”

In 2002, my dad died at 51. Ever since, I’ve worried about reaching that age, and a while back I reached out to somebody who understood. I learned about @DaleJr and how he coped, & wound up meeting a man I shared blood with but didn’t actually know. https://t.co/2iNAYaPcPS

Hey everyone, Happy New Year. I'm going to do a livestream aimed at helping aspiring NASCAR media members on Monday (Jan. 6). If you're interested, please fill out the form below so I can send you the link (obviously this is free and open to anyone).
Some background: I get asked all the time about advice for breaking into the NASCAR media or how to get started, etc. and it's tough to get back to everyone with personalized answers. So if you're looking for some general tips or wondering how it all works or just need some inspiration to get started, I'm hoping this will help.
This is ideally aimed at people who already have some limited experience covering races or doing a podcast, etc. but it's OK if you don't have any experience at all.
We can make the topics as broad or specific as you want, but that's what I'm hoping to hear from you on the form below. Thanks, and please pass this along to anyone else who you think might be interested!
