@LGB_1962 @andyburnham Your maths is off, but your point is valid. E.g. if someone’s rates go up ~50% from £5k to £7.5k, then they get a 20% reduction on the £7.5k, that takes them back down to £6k. Overall increase therefore is “only” +20% total.

@g__j @OctopusEnergy Until we decouple electricity pricing from the gas prices, we will keep getting screwed. Cosy tariff obviously helps heat pump users but it’s a sticking plaster concealing the fact that the pricing system
Is fundamentally broken.

@torquespeak @g__j @OctopusEnergy The 20% is probably people with insufficient insulation, presumably too difficult/costly to retrofit. Unfortunately a huge amount of our housing stock fits that profile in the UK. The other big reason why they don’t save more money and become the norm is how we set elec prices!

@g__j Fair point - but if we want to consider end use of fossil fuels we also have to think about the (estimated) hundreds of millions of people in China that still burn coal, biomass directly just for day to day heating and cooking. We aren’t doing that in the West.

@sebastiansalek NMW increases are important, but I think these increases are too high and will be inflation drivers and suppress job growth. This feeds into higher cost of living and contributes to interest rates needing to be kept high. Mistake.

@ELPinchbeck We insulated under the floor of our C.1910 Edwardian home. Huge difference to gas consumption and heat levels including fast warmup and slower cooldown times. Cost <£5 per square metre professionally installed.
