As someone who’s work in the field and has reviewed candidates, here’s what separates those who get interviews from those who don’t.

1. Stop applying everywhere.
Choose one niche, Healthcare, FinTech, Product, Marketing, Supply Chain, and build projects around it.

2. Build a portfolio that looks like real work.

Don’t use Titanic or Iris datasets.

Create 5–10 projects that solve actual business problems, with SQL scripts, dashboards, GitHub documentation, insights, and recommendations.

3. Build a list of 100 target companies.
Don’t wait for jobs to find you.

Research companies, bookmark their careers page, and check them weekly.

4. Find the hiring manager before you apply.
Search for:

Head of Data
Analytics Manager
BI Manager
Product Analytics Manager
Talent Acquisition Partner

Connect with them and engage with their content before reaching out.

5. Send personalised outreach.
Don’t ask for a job.

Introduce yourself, mention a relevant project you’ve built, and express interest in future opportunities. You’re building familiarity, not begging.

6. Don’t rely on LinkedIn alone.

7. Get referrals strategically.

8. Build your online reputation.

Case studies
Business insights
Projects

Hiring managers Google candidates. Give them something worth finding.

9. Tailor every application.
Mirror the keywords in the job description and highlight the projects most relevant to that role.

10. Follow up.
If you haven’t heard back after 7–10 days, send a polite follow-up. Many interviews happen because candidates stayed visible.

The biggest mistake I see isn’t a lack of skill.

It’s waiting for opportunities instead of creating multiple paths to them.
