Delighted to receive Shahid Khan Afridi, former captain of the Pakistan cricket team and one of the country's most celebrated all-rounders, to the United Nations Headquarters today.

We discussed, among other things, the important role that sports diplomacy can play in fostering dialogue, strengthening people-to-people bonds, and promoting peace and mutual understanding among nations.

I also briefed him on the work of the Pakistan Mission and Pakistan's active engagement with the UN in advancing multilateralism, dialogue, and international cooperation.

I commended Shahid Afridi for his outstanding contributions to Pakistan cricket as well as his appreciable welfare initiatives.

We also recalled many memorable occasions when he captivated millions of cricket fans around the world with his match-winning batting performances, and equally magical spin bowling.

The UNAMA resolution, adopted today by consensus, expresses the Security Council's serious concern over the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan, which continue to pose a grave threat to international peace and security.

It is, indeed, deeply concerning that the elements within the Taliban regime are actively collaborating with several terrorist groups and providing them with safe havens.

The TTP, BLA, Majid Brigade, ISIL-K, Al-Qaida and ETIM continue to operate with impunity inside Afghanistan. Many of these terrorist groups are responsible for cross-border terrorist attacks targeting Pakistani civilians and law enforcement personnel, including critical infrastructure and public places.
