USR vs. USDe: Why Structural Safety Should Be the New Standard for Yield-Bearing Stablecoins
Ethena has been making waves recently, especially after TLGY secured $360 million in committed PIPE financing. TLGY Acquisition Corp. and StablecoinX have now signed a definitive agreement to merge, forming a new entity called StablecoinX Inc. - a treasury vehicle dedicated to supporting Ethena’s ecosystem. This capital injection is expected to fuel aggressive buybacks of Ethena’s governance token, ENA, over the next six weeks.
Meanwhile, USDe’s supply has surged, cementing its position as one of the largest yield-bearing stablecoins in the market. But with rapid growth comes a crucial question: How safe is USDe really - especially compared to USR from Resolv Labs?
Ethena: Safety Under the Microscope
In June 2025, we can observe from Ethena’s custodian attestation that:
• $46.937M was immediately available for redemptions in the mint/redeem contract.
• An additional $61.14M was held in the Reserve Fund.
That gives a total of $108.08M in “safety buffers” (immediate redemption + reserve) to support a circulating supply of 5.595B USDe, which has since grown to 7.58B USDe according to recent figures.
Now, in the event of an exploit or systemic failure, USDe holders would rush to redeem their tokens. This would:
1. Rapidly drain the $46.937M in the mint/redeem contract.
2. Trigger panic-selling on secondary markets.
According to CowSwap (on Ethereum):
• There’s about $40M in USDe liquidity and $50M in sUSDe liquidity.
• Even if we assume full routing via these pools (totaling $90M), it’s still insufficient for mass redemptions.
Once both CowSwap liquidity and the $108M redemption + reserve buffers are depleted, any exploit larger than ~$200M (≈2.64% of current supply) could trigger major solvency concerns - given that the current collateral ratio is only 101.15%.
Importantly, this 1.15% buffer reflects just the mint/redeem contract and emergency reserve, meaning any losses exceeding this threshold - even after accounting for secondary market liquidity - would begin to impact the core backing of USDe, assuming all remaining collateral is tied up in the ZD (delta-neutral) operations, which would likely also be impacted in the event of a systemic failure or exploit, as the loss would originate there.
There is simply not enough structural overcollateralization to absorb a significant systemic shock.
USR: Designed for Tail Risk Protection
Now compare that to USR:
• USR currently has a collateral ratio of 200.7%.
• This includes a reserve buffer of $264M, derived from the RLP tranche.
RLP acts as the junior tranche and is designed to absorb losses first in the event of systemic failures or execution losses. This means USR holders (the senior tranche) are only affected after the entire RLP buffer is depleted.
In other words, $264M in losses can be absorbed by RLP before USR’s own collateral backing is even touched.
USR accomplishes this level of protection while only representing ~3.5% of USDe’s supply (262M) - yet it already offers more buffer protection ($264M vs. $200M).
Final Thoughts
In risk terms, USR is significantly safer. It has a larger reserve relative to its size, more robust overcollateralization, and is built with these tail risks in mind - making it arguably a more resilient YBS structure in case of systemic failure.
