The #GlobalPlasticsTreaty requires meaningful recycling targets. My advice: a minimum 55% recycling target for plastic packaging.

It’s time to #BeatPlasticPollution
Addressing plastic pollution requires a new way of thinking that looks at the entire life cycle of plastics, from production to consumption and waste management.

1/3 It was an honor to attend the first UN negotiation for a global treaty on plastic pollution. TOMRA attended as signatories to the Business Coalition for a Global #plasticstreaty with EMF +@WWF. This is the first of five meetings that should wrap in 2024 with a global treaty.
2/3 My takeaway is that this could be a very bold instrument to address plastic pollution . A lot remains to be agreed upon, but it could a) address the full life-cycle of plastic b) address plastic production, and c) set reduction targets. In addition to leveling up recycling.
ICYMI Ireland announced details of their upcoming Deposit Return System. Cans and plastic bottles less than 500ml will have a 15 euro cent (16¢) deposit, and 25 euro cents (26¢) above 500ml. "It has been 'a hit with kids in the local areas". https://t.co/tN49xBzwGl

(2/2) and there's no reason why policy to adopt a single use DRS can't also add provisions to encourage refillables like grants for reuse infrastructure, refillable quotas or even a tax on single use containers. Both container types would be returned in the same infrastructure.
(1/2) This video from the @FT sums up the DRS situation pretty well. I would just add that refillable beverages are declining everywhere in Europe and after the introduction of the single use DRS in Germany that declined actually stabilized. https://t.co/frv4ErKlrf
(1/3) Today is an exciting day. EMF + @WWFUS have formed The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, bringing together businesses who are committed to developing an ambitious, effective + legally binding UN treaty to end plastic pollution.
(2/3) A global treaty is a once in a generation opportunity to tackle the plastic pollution crisis in a globally coordinated way. When the treaty is debated, it's important the business community is there to affirm our commitment to work on solutions, not drag our feet.
CA continues its march to apply EPR principles to packaging, this time by super-charging its deposit return system. This law will add wine &liquor, bring more convenience to the system and invest in piloting new innovations. https://t.co/KabBOBx8ic via @rrecycling#bottlebill
