Behind-the-Scenes

When we created EmotiGuy, he included 11 morphs (blend shapes) specifically designed to be used in an application called Mimic. Mimic would use a combination of these 11 morphs applied at various levels to shape the mouth into various Phonemes.

The Mimic application could analyze a sound file and associated text to approximate how the mouth would look when the character was speaking. It even included realistic eye blinks and head movements.
This enabled people to easily create a speaking EmotiGuy animation - technology that was amazing for the time!

For many years, I stayed away from EmotiGuy-related projects because I believed my agreement with DAZ prevented it.

After recently reviewing that agreement and obtaining legal advice, I no longer believe that supporting community projects celebrating EmotiGuy’s history and cultural impact conflicts with my obligations.

What matters most to me is that a character I created more than twenty years ago is still being enjoyed and shared around the world. My involvement is simply about celebrating that legacy and the community that has kept him alive.

As his creator, I'm proud to officially back $JOE.
