Crypto Startup School (CSS23) Spotlight 🔦
Team: @frenslol
Founders: @jpren, @brianli101, @jckyeh
Where is the team from?
🇺🇸 San Francisco · 🇺🇸 Pittsburgh · 🇨🇦 Toronto
What are you building?
Frens — WeChat for web3. Message and transact with friends, protocols, and smart contracts. Pay, vote, trade, and crowdfund without leaving the conversation. Web3 experiences are inherently multiplayer, but there’s no way to message friends and groups with the context of on-chain actions. We’re building the communications super app that seamlessly integrates transactions, applications, and protocols into the messaging experience.
How did the co-founders meet?
We met while hacking on public goods at Orange DAO. JP and Jack worked together at ClassDojo. Before this, Brian and JP separately founded YC-backed consumer social startups.
What’s a milestone or update from the project that you’d like to share?
We’ve been co-creating crypto-native messaging features with our community that could not have been possible in web2.
One lesson or takeaway from CSS so far?
Having a credible path to decentralization is important for crypto startups — founders need to think about this from the start. In terms of engineering: focus on finding product market first, then progressively decentralize.
Favorite place/s you’ve been to in LA?
Celebrity spotting at the Venice Beach Gold’s Gym and burning the midnight oil with CSS friends at the Santa Monica WeWork
Our thesis is simple at TITLES 💫
Ethereum is an open source database that is always evolving and highly unique.
Just like @DuneAnalytics empowers storytelling through transactional data...
We're doing the same but through onchain media.

The CFTC’s treatment of Ooki DAO is problematic, but most DAOs aren’t subject to CFTC rules.
Here’s how Origami protects the enterprise-level DAOs and how you can protect yourself.
