On #EarthDay2026, we hosted the ‘Food Security and Sustainable Food Systems: Interdisciplinary Perspectives from Law, Economics and Nutrition’ workshop at St John's Innovation Centre in Cambridge.
The day offered a valuable opportunity to reflect on the interconnected challenges shaping global food systems. Bringing together researchers, legal scholars and nutrition scientists, the programme created space for thoughtful dialogue across disciplines.
Discussions spanned sustainable food value chains, urban food waste policy, EU trade liberalisation, the human right to food, and food safety awareness in developing country contexts. Together, these perspectives underscored both the complexity of the issues and the importance of working across traditional boundaries.
The programme concluded with a panel discussion chaired by Luca Romano and @ProfSumantraRay , with contributions from Saeeda Ahmed, @SarahArmes6 , Francesco Giurdanella, Martin Kohlmeier and @martyn_kathy . The discussion brought together diverse perspectives, encouraging further reflection on the role of collaboration and evidence in shaping more sustainable and equitable food systems.
We are grateful to all speakers, panelists and attendees for contributing to a meaningful and considered exchange, and to our partners CSEIA, FOSTER and @unipr for their collaboration. The conversations from the day continue to inform and inspire ongoing work in this space.
