The smoke in the video may disappear, but the scars left on #PreahVihear Temple by the severe attack carried out by the #Thai military cannot be erased from the evidence.

The video being circulated shows disturbing scenes of heavy-weapons fire and powerful explosions in the area of Preah Vihear Temple, in December 2025, a #WorldHeritage property. Thick clouds of smoke rising from the temple area illustrate the intensity of the attack and the grave risks that the use of such weaponry posed to an ancient monument of irreplaceable value to #Cambodia and to humanity as a whole.

What makes this video even more significant is its origin. According to verification, the video was recorded and disseminated by members of the Thai military themselves. It is therefore not merely footage of an explosion; it constitutes an important piece of digital evidence that should be examined alongside the physical evidence of damage identified and documented at Preah Vihear Temple.

More importantly, evidence of the damage is not merely a claim made by Cambodia. The joint advisory mission of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and ICOMOS, which inspected Preah Vihear Temple from 1 to 6 March 2026, documented direct damage to the World Heritage property, including severe destruction and displacement of architectural elements, damage to or loss of carvings and inscriptions, as well as traces of blast effects on the temple structures and surrounding cliff areas.

In other words, what is seen in the video has left physical traces on the temple itself. The explosions captured on camera did not disappear with the smoke. Their consequences were recorded on the stones, structures, carvings, inscriptions and architectural elements of a temple that has stood for centuries.

At the same time, CMAC conducted clearance and verification of explosive remnants in the Preah Vihear area following the fighting. Data referenced in the UNESCO-ICOMOS documentation record the discovery of substantial quantities of explosive remnants and weapon fragments in the area, including cluster-munition remnants, unexploded ordnance and thousands of artillery fragments. This technical evidence adds another important layer to the documentation of damage undertaken by international heritage experts.

The evidence should therefore be read together: the video records the attack as it occurred; CMAC documents the remnants of weapons and explosions on the ground; and UNESCO-ICOMOS documents the resulting damage to the World Heritage property.

Together, they form a compelling chain of evidence: the attack was captured on video - remnants of weapons were found on the ground - and damage to the temple was documented by international heritage experts.

The damage inflicted upon Preah Vihear Temple cannot be erased by any subsequent assertion. Broken stones, damaged structures, and affected carvings and inscriptions constitute physical evidence. The explosive remnants and weapon fragments documented by CMAC constitute technical evidence. And the footage of the attack constitutes digital evidence.

The smoke in the video may disappear, but the scars left on Preah Vihear Temple by the attack cannot be erased from the evidence.
