People w/ mental health conditions make up 53% of the population at Rikers.
On average, they are held 61% longer.
We pay $556,000 per person annually to keep them in jail. 90% on Rikers are held without conviction.
By contrast, it costs ~$42k to put them in supportive housing.
Clarence Thomas disclosed $1,200 in free car tires he received in 2002.
But he didn’t disclose:
- half a million dollar vacations
- trips on private jets, yachts
- a billionaire buying his mother’s home
- $150,000 in tuition payments for his adoptive son https://t.co/YVa2HsEnyr
This bar chart has attracted the attention of the richest man in the world. Let me walk you through how I would interpret it as a statistician (and a human).
I’m a pediatric speech therapist…I was sitting in on an eval for services & the ? was “What do you use a towel for” the baby said cleaning..which is correct cuz he knew when his mama said clean something get a towel or rag.. the yt lady marked it wrong before I intervened! Smh
great day to share some of my fav pics of princess diana hanging out and shaking hands w AIDS patients at a time when the disease was so stigmatized, nurses would leave trays of food outside of patients’ rooms for fear of catching it via touch
@OgLakyn And It plays right into the Right Wing false belief that actors and anyone in the creative Arts is somehow "The Elite" and not just workers too, trying their best in a difficult economy. Meanwhile it is the flag waving Arms Dealers who are The Elite.
The fact that so many people work so hard to make much less than that is an indictment on capitalism, on society, and on the ruling class. It is a BROKEN system that makes basic stability extremely out of the norm and outside of so many people's reach.
TW: Lynching
The lynching of Jordan Neely is what happens when you blame every violent thing that happens in this country on mental illness because while it excuses violent behavior from white people, it criminalizes mental illness in Black people.
The man who choked him
They forgot that their beach house, yacht, and private jet was paid for by the folks writing Modern Family and the Simpsons. The people who spend months pouring over a screenplay that will never be able to afford a house after they watch it make hundreds of millions of dollars.
Folks don't sign up for streamers because of the hit shows studio heads pulled out of a magic hat. You watch to be entertained. To laugh and cry and feel something. To escape into worlds created by writers.
No writer wants to strike. We want to work. We want to continue writing the scripts that become the shows that set this app on fire night after night, week after week.
Our work creates BILLIONS of dollars that make CEOs and shareholders millions of dollars and guess what?
At the Revere Hotel in Boston, FBI agents and Army Special Ops units were about to conduct a "training exercise".
In the "exercise", they would go into a room and interrogate a "role player".
Instead, they went to the wrong room, where an unsuspecting airline pilot answered the door. They handcuffed him, threw him into the shower, and interrogated him for about an hour, before he was able to convince them he wasn't the "role player".
They then told him that he could never speak about what had happened, and left.
When it became public, the government's response was basically "oops".
