๐โก Viking Link is SWITCHED ON!!
After 10 years of international collaboration with @EnerginetDK and 5 years of construction, our newest interconnector between the UK and Denmark is switched on.
The electricity link stretches a record-breaking 765km (475 miles) making it the worldโs longest subsea and land connection. At full capacity Viking Link will allow the sharing of enough clean electricity to power up to 2.5 million UK homes.

@PierreElKhoury2 How will this law work if our electricity sector is not privatized? Will the government own all the DERs and regulate the price (monopoly)?

In 2023, Europe witnessed a significant transformation in its power markets, largely due to the expansion of renewable energy capacity. The average share of European power generated from solar, wind, and hydro sources reached 46%, marking a 6% increase from the previous year.
A stark contrast is evident between the days with the highest and lowest renewable energy generation. February 23rd recorded the year's lowest renewable generation, with minimal wind and solar contribution. The demand peaked at approximately 380 GW, with nuclear power fulfilling around 20%, renewables contributing 33%, and the rest supplied by fossil fuels. Notably, even on this day, zero-emission sources accounted for about half of the total power generation.
Conversely, on August 7th, a significant surge in solar and wind generation dramatically reduced the reliance on fossil fuels. With a peak load of about 300 GW, nuclear power again provided 20%, while renewables impressively met 58% of the total demand. This day also highlighted increased activity in balancing supply and demand, particularly visible in gas and pumped storage patterns.

The new 1.4 GW Viking Link, a subsea power interconnector between the UK and Denmark, has began physical tests, with around 10% of its capacity being utilized by TSOs. Exports from the UK to Denmark will peak at 149 MW, while the reverse flow will peak at 131 MW. Energinet and the UK's National Grid plan to launch the cable for commercial operation on December 29th, making it the world's largest subsea power interconnector at 770km in length.
Initially, the UK-Denmark link will rely on day-ahead and intraday capacity auctions. However, after two to nine months of stable operation, it will offer physical transmission rights for monthly, quarterly, and yearly products. This development represents the first direct power connection between the two countries, enhancing energy trade and cooperation.
