One way this is accomplished is to re-defining the abuse with terms such as “mistake,” “misjudgment,” “failure,” or “misunderstanding”. A significant issue within the Church regarding abuse is that its theology often suggests that all sins are equal, which can lead to minimizing abuse and offering "cheap grace" to perpetrators.

An “independent investigator” who has previously represented churches or Christian organizations in sexual abuse claims is not “independent” and cannot be trusted.
