My daughter came to me looking completely exhausted.

“There’s this boy at school who NEVER stops bragging.

His shoes cost more than everyone else’s.
His gaming rank is apparently legendary.
His dad knows famous people.
His family has three cars.
Mom, nobody even asks him. He just starts talking.”
Being the mature and supportive parent that I am, I gave her some excellent advice:
“Next time, look him straight in the eyes and say:

‘That’s amazing.

Who asked?’”

My daughter stared at me.

“Mom. That’s mean.”

Fine.

Apparently, I’m the bad influence.

A few days later, she came home smiling.

“He finally stopped bragging.”

I was impressed.

“What did you say to him?”

“Nothing.”

“Then what did you do?”

“I started calling him ‘Podcast.’”

I froze.

“Why Podcast?”

She shrugged.

“Because nobody asked for it, but it keeps talking anyway.”

Jesus Christ.

I suggested one comeback.

Rishi has no military family, his parents immigrated here from India.

He does it out of pure gratitude.

As one 100-year-old Marine who stormed Iwo Jima told him, remembering the flag going up:

"The hair on my arms still stands up when I think about how beautiful it was."
