When I was in 6th form my teacher used the wonderful phrase ‘bourgeois sense of productivity’ to describe things like reorganising your ring binder, which made you feel productive, but failed to help you actually prepare for exams.

More and more frequently it strikes me politicians are unable to do anything other than ‘bourgeois productivity’ - banning things, legislating against ‘offence’, identity politics, entering into wars of words with people like Elon musk.

All of them a huge distraction from solving the big issues that we face, which will take intelligence, hard work and risk controversy.
