The macroeconomy is strong--high growth, low unemployment, falling inflation--the best of any advanced economy.
But there was a reluctance to present/understand how families were still not out of the deep inflation hole. And too much masked by cherrypicking/misleading stats.
@whstancil I know you think everything just about vibes but it would help if you engaged with evidence from the real world rather than construct mind castles https://t.co/TOHMq1u8MO
The archetypal example of this is how Democrats keep talking about “the very real economic pain suffered by workers.” There’s no actual empirical evidence that workers suffered greatly in the last few years, and a ton of evidence workers prospered. Sorry if that’s inconvenient.
This is the kind of person that doesn't think they're capable of racism cause they're progressive. Holy shit the bike lanes socialism crew will not bring forth the new deal
Some free advice for Democrats: if you want to win another election, find every clout-chasing pundit who told you voters were delusional about their unhappiness with the economy so you could ignore them, and never listen to them again. Start with this guy.
10/ Those are hard things for the left.
A firm break with neoliberalism.
Listen to poor and rural people, men in crisis. Don't decide for them.
Pick fights. Embrace populism.
Build a big tent. Be less judgmental.
But we are beyond small fixes.
If guns and climate are the things you want to give up, you are ignoring everything above.
Support Occupy. Support the DSA. Support the growing base of radicals. Support dockworker strikes.
9/ Real economic populism should be our tentpole.
But here's the thing - then you need to let people into the tent who aren't 100% on board with us on every social and cultural issue, or issues like guns or climate.
6/ We don't listen enough; we tell people what's good for them.
And when progressives like Bernie aggressively go after the elites that hold people down, they are shunned as dangerous populists. Why? Maybe because true economic populism is bad for our high-income base. 😬
2/ The left has never fully grappled with the wreckage of fifty years of neoliberalism, which has left legions of Americans adrift as local places are hollowed out, rapacious profit seeking cannibalizes the common good, and unchecked new technology separates and isolates us.
Unmasked HCW: “Why are you masking? Are you sick?”
Me: “No and I’m trying to stay that way”
HCW: “Oh are you afraid of Covid? You’re not going to get Covid HERE”
Followed by a big scoff. I don’t get it. The hospital is literally the place I’m MOST likely to catch Covid.
What Bernie does is center economic issues that have majoritarian support – because the best response to attacks on vulnerable groups is a counter-narrative that redirects anger to the real villains, the billionaires and corporations that are actually making people’s lives worse.
Rashida Tlaib won, outpacing Harris by 39 points in Dearborn.
Two women, including a Black woman, running for Michigan state Supreme Court won.
Sexism and racism may have played a role in Kamala Harris losing, but it is evidently an insufficient explanation.
Never forget that Democratic Party leadership chose to send Bill Clinton - the Super-Predator guy - to Michigan to champion genocide and settler colonization against people whose relatives live in that state.
That can't be ignored. https://t.co/PVNP9c9wY3
