How can Micheál Martin say Katie’s case is not emblematic?
Emblematic means a clear example of something bigger.
So let me ask this.
If a child waiting 15 years for proper hip surgery is not emblematic of a broken system, what is?
If a young woman living with cerebral palsy, hip dysplasia, a twisted femur, a retroverted pelvis and a labral tear is left in pain while her family has to fundraise to get her to a surgeon abroad, what is that an example of?
If missed school days, missed milestones, years of appointments, reports, referrals, excuses and delays are not emblematic of failure, then what exactly would be?
Katie is not just “one case.”
Katie is a daughter.
A sister.
A granddaughter.
A 19-year-old girl who has spent most of her childhood waiting for someone to help her.
Her case is emblematic of every family who has had to beg to be heard.
Every parent who has had to fight through exhaustion.
Every child who has been left waiting until things got worse.
Maybe Katie’s case is not emblematic to people in power.
But to us, it is everything.
And if 15 years of pain, waiting and fighting is not a symbol of a broken system, then I honestly do not know what is.

We fought for Harvey at 12 weeks pregnant when we got the diagnosis.
We fought for Harvey at 36 weeks pregnant when they suggested withdrawing medical care at birth.
We fought for Harvey when we found out he had severe scoliosis and had only been linked to an orthopaedic surgeon that deals with feet.
We fought for Harvey when they dismissed my concerns around allergies-later diagnosed as anaphylactic.
We fought for Harvey when they tried to provide a buggy instead of a wheelchair.
We fought for Harvey when he had delays getting a suitable hospital bed for home.
We fought for 5 years to get him a speech device so he could communicate.
We fought for him to get scoliosis surgery.
We fought for answers when we found out he was removed from the surgical list.
Harvey is now gone and we will continue to fight for him, and for the other children and families facing these unnecessary and cruel battles.
We fight because Harvey deserved better and we fight because that is what Harvey always did.
If government or CHI think we will ever be quiet and just accept what has been allowed happen, they simply haven’t been paying attention.

Protecting Against Predators

As I read the horrific details of a how a 10-year-old girl "absconded from State care" and was lured onto the grounds of Citywest Hotel, to be brutally raped... all I can I think of is how much the Govt have been warned.

In 2023, UCD released an explosive report "Protecting Against Predators". The report warns that groups of men are targeting children in State care, grooming them via social media & trafficking them to hotels. The report makes a direct comparison to UK’s grooming gang scandals in Rotherham & Rochdale. Some chilling quotes from the report:

“there’s groups of men,.. targeting children in care are only the tip of the iceberg,”

"children and young people in State care in Ireland are being targeted in an organised manner for sexual exploitation and are taxied to hotels around the country"

"Girls are being picked up in taxis and brought to hotels where they are coerced or enticed to provide sexual acts to multiple men in exchange for money, phones, or drugs"

"It's organised, not random: networks sharing kids like commodities, just like the UK grooming gangs in Rotherham, we're seeing the same playbook here."

Two years on from publication...Ireland has ignored the red flags. What happened is NOT isolated. This is systematic. This is the Magdalene Laundries or Mother & Baby Home or Church Abuse scandal of our time. Everyone in polite society too afraid to speak up.
