A5: I really like Baloney, Henry P. I like that it relates vocabulary instruction to the reading skill of clarifying. I think that will help students see the connection between learning new words and how that can help them with comprehension. #hcpsread
A4: LAFS 3.6 is all about students acquiring and using vocabulary. The vocab routine is a method that can facilitate the instruction of this standard. Students are acquiring general, academic, and domain specific vocabulary through the routine. #hcpsread
A3: In an interactive read aloud, you can expose students to rich vocabulary and word choice around a variety of topics. These exposures, although they seem brief, can build students’ word schemas. Plus- they’re awesome 😎 #hcpsread
@MrsPalmerton708 So true! Hopefully they can see the connection and understand the reason to stop and attempt to figure out the meaning instead of simply skipping over it! #hcpsread
A2: Only when a reader understands the words they are reading can they understand the text they are reading. When readers understand the words and word relationships it allows their brains to make meaning and think deeply about what they are reading. #hcpsread
A1: Morphology and vocabulary go hand and hand. First, it’s part of our standards. Second, by making the connection to morphology, you’re providing the tools for students to unlock meaning in new words. #hcpsread
Chapter 6 Follow Up: We tried word charades. We incorporated it as part of our morning meeting. The kids loved it! Later when we were waiting outside of specials, we reviewed some of their actions. #hcpsread
A5: I would like to try Deal or No Deal. Having Ss work to write the questions would help amp up the rigor of the celebration. It’s always difficult to find time in the ELA block; if you use the celebrations in a purposeful way, they shouldn’t take an abundance of time. #hcpsread
A4:In Welcome Words, Ss not only discuss the meaning of their words, but also interact socially. The ability to spend time speaking and listening is beneficial to ELL+low SES Ss as another exposure to the words and the additional words that are discussed through convos. #hcpsread
A3:As the Ss participate in the celebrations, they are confirming/ correcting their word schemas. In Jeopardy, Ss answer questions. If they’re correct, they’re validated and the rest of Ss repeat the correct answer- helps ensure all Ss have the correct understanding.#hcpsread
A2: During celebrations, Ts validate student learning and are also present to correct any final misconceptions. Also, and maybe most importantly, they celebrate the Ss’ learning! What a great way to engage Ss in a fun and meaningful way! #hcpsread
A1: The activities in Celebrate and Validate encompass the learning throughout the routine. In the activities, Ss show what they’ve learned about word meanings and relationships. They can also transfer their learning to new situations.

Chapter 5 follow up: We started the vocab routine for our new Hispanic Heritage Month text on Cesar Chavez. The students began investigating the words labor, legacy, and activist. #hcpsread
A5: Research proves that becoming engaged in the learning- through music, movement, and repeated exposure will have a bigger impact that sitting passively and copying definitions. Ss need to interact with the words and their meaning in order to own them. #hcpsread
A4: Ss hold themselves and each other accountable for their learning. Ss want to participate because it’s engaging! They want to share and celebrate their learning, so they push themselves and work hard. #hcpsread
