This year we were invited by @BBCLearning to form a Language Advisory Group alongside @RCSLTpolicy@ICANcharity & @Comm_nTrust to understand the rationale for early years language & literacy development and provide insights. Check out its progress here: https://t.co/Sb4hVjQ5Dn
Presenting on PBL at British School Brussels this pm - it would be good if all UK students could have the same opportunity 'to go places, meet people and do and make things'.
When you empower students with their 1st language and start them from a position of strength, they shine! My newcomers wrote autobiographical bilingual poems that celebrate their culture, family & themselves #translanguaging#assetbasedstance#biliteracy
New computational modelling work from Chang & Monaghan showing quality & quantity of pre-literacy language exposure influences reading development

New paper seems to suggest difficulties in emotional competence in children with #devlangdis make some of these children more vulnerable to victimisation and warrant specific support and interventions @NAPLIC #bullying https://t.co/q8xcL62Rsi
Huge implications if we are to identify and support the high numbers of children with #SLCN particularly in areas of social disadvantage. Expertise from Speech and Language Therapists needed now more than ever.
New paper investigating “Mathematical Abilities in Children with Developmental Language Disorder” - relationship between #devlangdis & mathematics was characterised by more detrimental performance on tasks with higher verbal demands .@NAPLIC https://t.co/36Ef0SnlbF
We need to change the conversation. Most svs in the UK accept 98% of referrals but evidence indicates that 40-60% of those waiting could have had their needs met through early intervention and prevention (Christie, 2011). @NatLeadAHPCYP at #RCSLTStudyDay2018
Really looking forward to working with Early Years Fundamentals. If you work in the Early Years PVI sector, check out their recent publication https://t.co/a1vcPDW8c9 Look out for SLC training available from Clarity in their soon to follow training directory.
Really pleased to be including in #collectived6 research @od_carter & @garyth66@BrightFuturesET based on their @EducationLBU Carey Philpott research. They re-imagined staff-appraisal and developed and evaluated a collaborative approach to school-based professional learning.
So much to unpick! Phonics is fab, BUT passing phonics check doesn’t ensure decoding later - I’m seeing lots of children in KS2 struggling to decode who passed PSC. Also decoding does not = reading! I’d love to see more emphasis on spoken language to really support reading comp.
Today marks six months since @RCSLT and @ICANcharity published #Bercow10 - check out our report card to see what progress we've made and what more is still to do! With huge thanks to all of the #Bercow10champions - we can't do it without you!
