Even the 1921 Tampa Bay Hurricane, the city's last major hurricane, was weakening on approach. It brought 10 - 12 feet of storm surge to Tampa Bay, split Captiva into two (why we have Captiva and North Captiva to this day) and brought tides 7 feet above normal to Punta Gorda.
