“Capital allocation” is really a prediction. Operational execution is largely what determines whether that prediction proves correct.
Execution is the foundation. Executional capability is part of the asset you’re allocating capital to.
I don’t think this is spoken about enough.
At the end of the day, it’s about teams building and delivering. The asset itself is almost never some magical compounding machine.
Capital allocation is the art of picking assets. More accurately, it’s the art of backing organizations or teams that can repeatedly create more value from those assets than anyone else.
@FinanceGhost This and also holding JSE listed mgmt teams accountable. The benefits brought to corporate governance in SA is under appreciated. You and fintwit and some pockets of the media who apply themselves, play a huge role here.
@FinanceGhost Chatting at the office this morning, 4 people nearby my desk bought from Amazon this week. All 4 orders got cancelled. Similarly I wonder how long it will take Amazon to stabilize operationally
@FinanceGhost I watched Summers on @alechogg . Were it not for the Boxer asset, this would have imploded 3 years ago. The lack of governance across non exec and exec level to get to that point is unreal. Boards complicit. Asset managers. Banks too.
@Siddels1000@FinanceGhost I suspect the growth in many of their categories y/y is happening online. Takealot, sixty60, Temu, Amazon. Many don’t track these newer competitors closely or accurately
@FinanceGhost Everyone is a hero in their own story. Amazing to think the board and executive believe they are handling this ‘well’. Hubris. Tone deaf.
@MillerMike51059@FinanceGhost How old is Mike, 41? Been ceo since 2023? meaning he was 39 at the time of appointment. So you’ve got 1,5 years before you can consider yourself competent Ghost
@JohannBiermann1 It appears they’ve started growing again in SA post the decline from enforcing duties circa Oct last yr. Temu & Shein #1 and #2 in “shopping” on ios and #2&3 on android behind takealot - ie well ahead of sixty60. No scooters so out of sight, but significant volume
@FinanceGhost Amazingly defensive replies to this post. R9m from a current exec is not small. And means all other options of liquidity - offshore portfolios, local properties were superior to this 9m. He is fully within his right to sell, but it is what it is. Anything but ‘comforting’
