Science alert: 3D view of ongoing fires & smoke plumes explain why the smell of smoke is usually more potent in the morning.
The US is off to its fastest fire season since at least 2012. Several large fires 🔥 are burning across Florida and Georgia. A wind shift blowing from the Southeast will begin to shift the smoke plumes northward in Central Florida and deeper into the Southeast in the Carolinas Thursday and Friday. Notice: As the animation dives down into 3D mode, the smoke during the late afternoon/ early evening extends higher into the atmosphere, but flattens out at night. The reason: during the day warmer air creates more rising air & mixing, lofting smoke higher and fanning the flames. But at night, as the air cools, humidity increases, the smoke sinks/ settles back to the ground and typically the fires briefly calm down. This helps explain why you smell more smoke in the early morning - smoke settles. #fire #smoke #florida #georgia
