The Growing Threat of Child Exploitation in Nigeria: A Call for Urgent Action
In a nation as diverse and dynamic as Nigeria, the presence of children should symbolize hope, potential, and the promise of a brighter future. However, a disturbing trend is unfolding, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where the sight of unaccompanied children, often engaged in menial labor or begging, has become alarmingly common. This phenomenon is more than a social inconvenience—it is a ticking time bomb threatening the stability and security of our society.
Last Sunday, an experience brought this reality into sharper focus for me. While seated in a garden with two friends, we encountered a young girl, no older than six, selling groundnuts. Intrigued and concerned, we called her over and began a conversation. To our shock, we discovered she was not from the area. She revealed she had been brought from Kano by an unidentified woman who forced her into this labor. The child, deprived of education and family support, longed to return home, her innocence a tragic reminder of the exploitation she faced.
This little girl is not an isolated case. Thousands of children in Nigeria are trapped in similar circumstances—victims of child labor, trafficking, and exploitation. Despite the existence of the Child Rights Act, the implementation and enforcement of laws protecting our children remain grossly inadequate.
The implications of this crisis are profound. These children, subjected to harsh conditions, are not only at risk of physical and emotional harm but also deprived of the opportunity to develop into productive members of society. If left unaddressed, this neglect creates a generation of individuals who may grow up resentful, uneducated, and potentially drawn into criminal activities, perpetuating cycles of poverty and insecurity.
It is time for Nigeria to pay special attention to the plight of its children. We must collectively ensure that every child is given the opportunity to live, learn, and thrive in a safe environment. Addressing this issue requires stronger enforcement of child protection laws, community engagement to raise awareness, and the provision of support systems for vulnerable children.
The sight of children suffering in the streets of Nigeria is more than an eyesore—it is a national tragedy. The responsibility lies with all of us—government officials, civil society, and citizens alike—to rise to the occasion and safeguard the future of our children.
To save a child today is to save Nigeria's future. Let us act now.

@renoomokri I don't believe you.
If PDP elects Wike as their flag bearer, they should as well plan for humiliating defeat at general elections, and PDP knows this.
@renoomokri Truly Reno I agree with you, there are elements that wants disintegration of Nigeria at all cost and you've always one of them. Your sudden change in this tweet is shocking to me. In the past you have said so much that could potentially weaken the foundations of this country.
