🎉 The journey to transforming governance begins!
After a competitive selection process, 12 outstanding fellows have been selected for the Student OpenGov Fellowship 2.0 Programme. These young innovators stood out through their creative pitches and commitment to advancing transparency, accountability, and citizen participation.
One of the exciting ideas emerging from this cohort focuses on reimagining how youths can access and analyse Area Council budget copies in driving Open Government engagement from the grassroots level.
As we prepare for the Orientation Session on June 12, 2026, we look forward to equipping these fellows for a journey of learning, leadership, and impact.
The future of open government is brighter when young people lead the conversation.

At DEAN, we believe Local Government is the first point for citizen-centric development.
That’s why we built this training around the #OGPLocal framework - it made all the difference.

Day One closes with deep reflections, honest conversations, and renewed commitments toward accountable and citizen-centered leadership.
From keynote speeches to goodwill messages and engaging facilitation sessions, participants explored practical governance realities, inclusive leadership, transparency, public trust, and the responsibility of people first governance.
The conversations may have ended for today, but the ideas, lessons, and commitments shared will continue far beyond the room.
This is more than a training.
It is a step toward building a new culture of local governance in the FCT.
As we look ahead to Day Two, the conversations continue with more learning, deeper engagement, and practical sessions focused on strengthening responsive and people-centered leadership at the local level.

Dr. ChiChi Aniagoli-Okoye’s @chichiaokoye sessions challenged participants to think beyond personalities and focus on building strong, sustainable governance systems.
Her reflections emphasized that effective governance is not measured by political rhetoric alone, but by structures, systems, accountability, and long-term administrative commitment.
“Government is not measured by political speeches; it is measured by administrative commitments.”
“Without systems, government becomes personality dependent; and when governance becomes personality dependent, it becomes unsustainable.”
The conversations reinforced the importance of institutional leadership, continuity, and governance systems that work for the people beyond individual administrations.

@AndrewMamedu sessions emphasized that accountability and transparency are not political favors, but democratic responsibilities owed to citizens.
His reflections challenged participants to see openness, budget transparency, and accountability as core governance values necessary for building public trust and strengthening local governance systems.
“Accountability is a right issue. It is the right of the citizens to get accountability from the LGA, you are not doing them a favour.”
“Budget transparency must not be viewed as a political tool but as a governance strength.”
The conversations reinforced the importance of transparent leadership, open governance, and responsive institutions that truly serve the people.

@semiyemichael reflections reminded participants that leadership at the local level requires humility, openness, and collaboration.
He emphasized that effective governance is not about acting like you know everything, but about listening, learning, and building partnerships that strengthen service delivery for citizens.
“As an LGA Chairman, to think you know it all is a wrong thing to do.”
“The LGA Chairmen should not wait for CSOs to call on them; they should be free to call on CSOs for help.”
The sessions reinforced the importance of partnership-driven governance, citizen engagement, and leadership that remains open to support, ideas, and accountability.

Dr. Onyeche Elizabeth Agbiti-Douglas (@agbiti25361) challenged participants to rethink leadership beyond promises and political statements, placing greater emphasis on inclusion, accountability, ethics, and impact-driven governance.
Her sessions highlighted the importance of leadership that listens, includes, and serves people intentionally while maintaining ethical standards in public office.
“Inclusion, Accountability, and Ethics are the non-negotiable standards of your tenure.”
“The test of local governance is not what you promise, but who benefits, who is heard, and who is impacted.”
The conversations reminded participants that sustainable governance is built when citizens are not only represented, but genuinely considered in decisions, policies, and development priorities.

As the Good Governance Practice Training comes to an end, we reflect on two impactful days filled with honest conversations, practical learning, and renewed commitments toward accountable and citizen-centered leadership.
From keynote speeches and goodwill messages to engaging facilitation sessions, participants explored governance realities around accountability, transparency, ethics, inclusion, citizen participation, and people-first leadership. The sessions created a safe space for chairmen and stakeholders to ask difficult questions, share practical experiences, and openly engage on the future of local governance in the FCT.
We sincerely appreciate all facilitators, keynote speakers, panelists, partners, and special guests who made our time part of these important conversations. Your insights, experiences, and contributions enriched the sessions and inspired deeper reflections on leadership and public service.
Interestingly, the conversations do not end here. Many of the chairmen expressed strong interest in having a sequel to the engagement, showing a growing commitment toward continuous learning and better governance practices.
This may mark the end of the activity, but it is certainly not the end of the movement toward transparent, inclusive, and responsive local governance.

DEAN Digital Literacy Class Activation officially comes to an end after an impactful journey across 3 Area Councils Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali. 🚀💻
Over the course of this activation:
✨ 30 schools were reached
✨ 15 activators were engaged
✨ 1500+ pupils were reached through practical and interactive learning sessions
Pupils across different classes were introduced to essential digital literacy topics including online safety, social media awareness, digital citizenship, and responsible technology use. 📚🌍
Beyond the learning sessions, this activation also created a space for pupils to express themselves, share their thoughts, and contribute to important conversations around the digital world. Their voices were heard throughout the process, and through this activation, those voices will continue to be amplified. ✨
Throughout the activation, some of the realities faced by these schools also became visible. Many Schools faced limitations such as the absence of computer teachers, lack of electricity, and limited access to digital tools and resources. These experiences further highlight the importance of continued investment in digital education and equal access to learning opportunities for every pupil. 🌍
As this phase wraps up, the outcomes and conversations sparked across these schools will continue beyond the classrooms. The mission to empower the next generation with digital knowledge and skills continues. 🙌✨
