Mamdani: There is a term so often used to describe our nation and those who have shaped it: American exceptionalism.
American exceptionalism, the conventional wisdom tells us, makes our freedom a little more free, is how we dug the Erie Canal and irrigated the West, is why children in far away lands grow up dreaming of one day moving here.
And yet the irony is that the story of America has so often been written by those who were told by others with power and influence and wealth that they were anything but exceptional.
For generation after generation, we have been told that when the world has sent its people to our shores, it has not sent its best. It sent Puritans and Sikhs and Quakers and Muslims and Jewish people who were banished for praying the wrong way, worshipping the wrong Gods, angering the wrong people. It sent peasants and serfs from who were treated as less because they hardly owned clothes, let alone land. It sent immigrants for whom power was something someone else had.
We are told that America is exceptional because we are richer, stronger, more powerful than everyone else.
The truth, my friends, is that America is exceptional because here, nothing is fixed into place. The frontier may be closed, we may have walked on the moon, but the work of fulfilling the values first enshrined in the Declaration of Independence-that work endures, my friends, and it belongs to us all.
It belongs too to our newest Americans, those standing here with me today, all of whom were recently naturalized. Nearly a decade ago, I too felt what you feel— the joy of no longer being just a New Yorker, but an American too.
@SpursJackals Great move to bring more experience and strategy to the team. He probably had the choice of many places to go and chose here. Shows the bright future we have.
Tobias Harris adds nothing that the Spurs were missing. Harris is a low volume, middling efficiency shooter, and he’s a replacement level defender. There were far better targets with the mid-level. San Antonio also could’ve cashed in picks with a trade instead. Don’t love it!
@JonesOnTheNBA I feel that it's much like the current economy: the middle class is being eliminated and the only thing that's left is to fight for the scraps. When the top 15 players take more than 75-80% of salaries then what's left to build on?
@Trysta_Krick Ok while I understand that this is a profoundly dumb statement to repeat, analytics and numbers are not a bad use case for worth. Hell, people PINE over DraftKings and FanDuel over odds on anything and you base your view on those lines. And that is also analytics.
@JeffGSpursZone Everyone needs to CHILL!!! It's a low risk high reward pick and now with the trade we have another possible big man option in Tarris Reid. Getting another guard is not going to help the obvious off the court minutes issue from Wemby.
@MarkDavis If this was the case then all those rich Russian oligarchs wouldn't bring their pregnant wives to Miami to have their kids. They know what the rules are and the benefits of it. But no one makes a fuss for rich people, only the poor and disenfranchised.
@nyr2299@TVietor08@FaceTheNation@nealbrennan I agree that cancelling is not a solution, but allowing these people to come invited to space and allowed to spew OBVIOUS lies is the issue that I have. We know what Graham is about and getting a "perspective" from him is a lesson in futility and stupidity.
@marklevinshow There is a great saying I saw on a silly anime that always plays out in my head every time I see people like you Mark: "The abuse of greatness is when it disjoins remorse from power."
No great words have even been spoken.
@marklevinshow You mention political power hungry demagogues as if they don't exist on your side of the plane. Read the room sir. You are SURROUNDED by people who want and thrive for power. It's the reason for their existence, even for your very own. You don't do this for fun. It's power.
@MikeTaylorShow@spurs I feel this is the best path for everyone. Our future is bright and we have the piece of a winner. A few tweaks and now with the experience that lasts forever, we head into the coming seasons looking like a winner. Stay the course.
@JeffGSpursZone I think you should find solace that the Spurs seem to have found a bit of a niche starting from the 4th of the last game. It seems like the Knicks weren't quite as sharp and the physicality bothered them. Wemby needed to be more dominant inside as well.
@marklevinshow We tell our children that they must learn to speak thoughtfully and intelligently in the face of adversity. Why are these rules not observed by the leader of the free world and supposedly better person? Why is that too much to ask?
@marklevinshow Let's assume he was being setup and ambushed to cause a confrontation. What could he have done, being the leader of the free world and supposedly better person, other than call her "stupid" and walk off?
