Climate Conversations - Edinburgh & beyond

A movement to have chats with people, face to face, to take the heat out of discussions about our climate
&
Raising awareness on the cost of energy crisis

[Climate Conversations - Edinburgh & beyond @ClimateConvos_]

The issue is:
We buy lots of gas
We buy it from abroad
The price has skyrocketted

We burn lots of gas to make electricity
So the price of the gas-fired electricity has skyrocketted

@MaytownMichael @GrahamLKeegan It would be better to simply delay the cooling, rather than cause, eg, the Antarctic to start having 39°C heatwave days, as we did in 2023

[Climate Conversations - Edinburgh & beyond @ClimateConvos_]

@DaleVince UK fossil gas production went up & up – until the gas started to run out at the end of last century ↙️

We kept using as much gas as ever – so we started importing lots, from all around the world ↘️

Luckily, we've started substitute gas with renewables ↘️⤵️

So we import less

[Climate Conversations - Edinburgh & beyond @ClimateConvos_]

@LeeSmit00241611 @GrahamLKeegan The water vapour in the air only lasts a few days, up to a week or two

Then it falls out of the air as
rain, fog, sleet, frost, hail, mist, snow or dew

The temperature then sets how much water evaporates again

So water vapour amplifies any changes but doesn't drive the changes

[Climate Conversations - Edinburgh & beyond @ClimateConvos_]

@MaytownMichael @GrahamLKeegan “A few degrees” is the difference between ice sheets mike's thick over Chicago & the present day

Now imagine “a few degrees” added on to what we have now

@GrahamLKeegan The Sun has been in a cooling cycle since around the 1950s
(the yellow line ↙️)

The Earth has been warming dramatically since the 1950s
(the blue line ↘️)

So it's not the Sun wot dun it

Yesterday, 30.4% of Europe's electricity was supplied from wind power

24.9% (2,109 GWh) from onshore
5.5% (467 GWh) from offshore

2,576 GWh in total

Berkeley Earth are now pointing out that we are currently above +1.5°C this year – ie it's just weather not (yet) the climate that has gone so high

But it's not a good sign for the climate-average in the near-future

[Dr. Robert Rohde @RARohde]

Never a good sign when I have to expand the y-axis.

September had the warmest temperature anomaly ever directly measured (i.e. since 1850).

Even if this new spike is temporary (certainly hope so), the trend is intimidating.

Does this give us an opportunity?

Is there a short succinct explainer that could change these Tory MP's minds?

[Doug Parr @doug_parr]

What the hell are these MPs reading?

Because it's got nothing to do with reality

Nearly half of Tory MPs think achieving net zero is not necessary for stopping climate change

@GrahamKirk17 @DrSimEvans Fracking in the UK would produce at peak – around 2% of current UK gas production

Even if we put 4 fracking wells within a mile of every home in England

Renewables already produce enough to substitute for all UK net production

A new record set for the amount of
CO₂ in our air

☹️ 😡

[Zack Labe @ZLabe]

ICYMI - levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) set new records in this month's update... 🥴

[Crouchender @CrouchenderPj]

With the driest February in 30 years, people in the UK better brace themselves for some serious water shortages this Summer unless the weather changes soon... 🙏🤔⛈️☔🌤️

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt as sad or as angry about the lost decades that we spent bickering and arguing about climate change... because it is clearly here now, and if we do not act, it will get worse" - NZ Climate Minister @jamespeshaw.

#UniperThemeWeek - We have set ourselves the goal of accelerating the #EnergyTransition in Europe. With the help of the #DecarbRoadmap, we want to achieve our goals on the way to #NetZero in the next several years.

It's only the 1st Saturday of the New Year, & already I've heard the stupidest news article of the year

Swiss ski resorts have been hit by climate change - warm weather & rain, causing insufficient snow cover

So they are flying in snow
